Australia Day 2015 - with no cricket at Adelaide Oval, what is a black sheep to do?

Today is Australia Day.  It is the official National Day of Australia and it is the anniversary of the First Fleet arriving in at Port Jackson in 1788.

Normally on Australia Day, there is cricket of some description on at Adelaide Oval. It has been a Test Match (5 day game) but in recent times, it has been a one day game. However, for some reason this year there was no game, which meant Akela had to find something else to do (Cricket on Australia Day for Akela has been like breathing – it is just what she and her family have always done)

So, Akela decided we were going to head back to Port Adelaide and have another look around at the paintings we saw the other day. She was convinced (correctly) that some would be completed and others in the final stages of completion. It was definitely worth going down to the Port to have another look!

We eventually dragged ourselves home, with the idea that maybe we could watch the cricket on the Television. Not a chance. It was being played in Sydney and it was washed out! Really, that was poor planning as it was such a nice day in Adelaide!

Wonderwalls Photography Tour

Today, Akela and I headed to the Port. Akela had booked herself into a guided photography tour for the Wonderwalls Festival in Port Adelaide. Essentially, it was about the Port being turned into a giant canvas for the weekend and the photography tour was a chance to have a guided tour of where the art work was being painted.

A lot of the work had been started in the few days prior to the weekend and was a work in progress over the weekend. It was certainly a interesting activity and we are looking at going back in a few days to have a look at the work.

More information about this can be found at http://wonderwallsfestival.com/about/

What a wash out

This evening, Aleka and I went to the Big Bash game at Adelaide Oval. Well, what was supposed to be the Big Bash game. It got rained out and essentially, the points were split between the two teams who were due to play the game this evening. Even though there was only a little bit of cricket played (we are talking about maybe 30 minutes of cricket), it was still a good atmosphere and everyone was in a rather festive mood!

Australian Venture - AV2015

I have just spent a few days at the Australian Venture, with Akela. We were working on the Archery Activity and it has been an entertaining few days.

A Venture is for Venturer Scouts (aged 14 to 18 years of age) and this was a national event. The last time it was held in South Australia was in 1997 and before that it was 1977. Cold Chsiel (a very well known Australian Band) played at that even (the 1977 one that is)

The weather could have been a little kinder – although, after the fire at the start of the week, the cooler weather and rain was a much welcome relief to many.

Anyhow, it was a good chance to provide a activity to Venturers, from both South Australia, Interstate and International Visitors.

A new Year Start

Last night, Akela took me to the 20Twenty Cricket game at Adelaide Oval. It is certainly one way to be entertained on New Year’s Eve. Like the previous New Year Eve, the game was entertaining, although the post match entertainment was not quite as good as last year’s though.

Akela took me into town after the game. We headed to the Pancake Kitchen for a drink and something to eat. However, we discovered that it was rather busy – to the point it had a line up coming out of it! So we opted to go around the corner and get something from a 24 hour deli place.

We eventually got to the bus stop to wait for the bus home. While we were waiting for the bus, we spent time watching the revellers and answering questions about which bus stop they needed to be at, where it was at etc.

It was certainly one of the more different ends to a New Year that we have experienced – in town and not partying certainly can be entertaining on New Years Eve! Maybe we will try it again!
