National Tree Planting Day

Today is ‘National Tree Day’ in Australia. For those who don’t know what this is (mainly my overseas readers who read my blog) I can provide the following information. “National Tree Day and Schools Tree Day provide all Australians with an opportunity to do something positive for the environment and reconnect with nature, thanks to support from our longstanding major sponsor Toyota Australia. Hundreds of thousands of Australians planted over 1 million native trees, shrubs and grasses at more than 3300 Tree Day events in 2012. We work with councils, schools and community groups to make it all happen” (http://treeday.planetark.org/about)

Akela booked the cubs and joeys into a local site, close to the scout hall. While there weren’t a great deal from the group who attended, there were enough people attending that the planting was done in less time than the activity had been planned for. Which was a really good thing and certainly the weather played a part in this as well.

Overall, a nice day, and those of us who attended enjoyed the day.

Ridley District Cub Section Roller Skating

Today, the cub section of Ridley District went Roller Shaking at Gawler Sports and Recreation Centre. It was a lot of fun. There are some very good skaters around the district, both adults and youth members alike. But there were also just as many who were trying skating for the very 1st time.

Overall, it was a great activity and everyone seemed to be keen to do it again. I think there are a few cubs who will be practising the activity a bit more so they get better at it.

40 Things Scout Leaders Say

40 Things Scout Leaders Say
At some stage, anyone who has been a leader within Scouting will have said most things on the list. Not everything, but most. There are plenty that Akela relates to and we thought we would share with the readers who follow my blog.

We hope everyone has a great weekend of scouting planned. The Cub Section of Ridley District are going Roller Skating over the weekend and we will up date after the activity.

Have a good Friday everyone!

Micky Mawson has landed in......Grand Falls - CANADA!

Well, it's with much relief that we can announce Micky has landed in Grand Falls, Newfoundland, Canada. For those who dont know, "Grand Falls-Windsor is a town located in the central region of the island of Newfoundland in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, with a population of 13,725 at the 2011 census.[1] The town is the largest in the central region, the fifth largest in the province, and is home to the annual Exploits Valley Salmon Festival.[2] Grand Falls-Windsor was incorporated in 1991 when the two former towns of Grand Falls and Windsor amalgamated." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Falls-Windsor).

Akela kindly went looking for maps for me and the following is what we found:

As we get more up dates, we will post and share them with everyone.

Planting Onions

Akela and I decided that I needed a little project to keep myself interested for when I am not off doing activities. So, after a bit of talking, we are going to look at growing some onions. We had looked at a few things, but the seasons were not right, so we went with the onions to start with. Akela said if I do really well, she will look at letting me earn my level one Gardner Badge.

So, in true Wilbur fashion, I have the photos to track my progress, from start to finish.

Charli's gone to visit

Many will know that Carli, the Playford Cub Pack Mascot is a friend and often stays with Akela Sarah, myself and Akela Alan. Well, Carli is presently staying with two cubs from Playford Cub Pack (a brother/sister combination) and their family. Their older brother, who is in Scouts at Playford Scout Troop is having his birthday today. They are having a blue theme for dinner and Charli got dressed for dinner. I think he looks really good dressed up! I hope to read more about what he has been up to while he’s been away when we get back to cubs!

30 Amazing facts About Scouts (UK based article)

30 Amazing Facts About Scouts

This is another article that Akela and I have read. It is very interesting and we thought that those who have been visiting my blog would enjoy the read of it as well.

Many people who have not been involved with Scouting don’t always know what Scouting is, or what it is about. They hold many negative views about Scouting. It is hoped that through my blog of my activities and sharing of articles such as this, that we can change this view of scouting.

Scout Group for the Disadvantaged

Scout Group for the Disadvantaged

Akela found this article after it was posted by a Scouts SA facebook page. It is interesting important read, and shows what can happen when local communities show they will support something. Provided of course they willing to support the organisation in question.
