SA Cuboree - last day

Today was the last day of camp. While we weren’t up as early yesterday, it was still another early start

This morning saw us complete three activity bases before lunch. They were certainly interesting and he cubs had a lot more fun today.

However, the activity bases were over way to quickly and the cubs had their last meal together before heading to the closing.

Tents were dismantled, farewells made and lots of tired cubs were collected by their parents. Many were looking forward to a hot shower and their own beds, but they were certainly glad they had been and had a great time with the many activities on offer.

SA Cuboree - Saturday

An early start was in order today. All were up early for a early breakfast and to be ready to get to the opening on time. Once that was done, it was time to head to the first activity for all. Ours were lucky to score Rock climbing for the first base.

We did have one home sick cub in the morning, but a bit of TLC and diversion from Wilbur was enough to see her recover to go back to the activities and enjoy the rest of the weekend (she was glad she didn’t go home at the end of the weekend as she had such a good time)

Lunch was enjoyable and the wraps were delicious. All were enjoyed by the cubs a great deal.

Activities after lunch included the two wet activities. It was just a pity that it had started to cool down. But a warm shower and tea soon saw the cubs back on track and ready for the evening entertainment.

The cubs were soon in bed and asleep a lot quicker tonight than they were last night. Pity Akela wasn’t and she didn’t get to bed before midnight again. But it was certainly a much needed sleep for her when she got there (and Wilbur as well!!!)

Cuboree - day of setting up

Today was warm, but a lot of work took place to ensure the site was set up before the onslaught of cubs arrived on site. Tents were put up after campsites were laid out and boundaries were established.

The Cubs started to arrive late afternoon and were very excited to be on site. Energy levels were high. Long energetic walks around Woodhouse were done to try and take some of the edge of the energy levels.

All were in bed, but sleep was a long time coming. Although, none of the Mawson Lakes Cubs heard the claps of thunder that went off directly overhead at just gone midnight (Akela was returning from a much needed shower at the time). It was certainly something to hear and experience, especially as it echoed throughout the hills.

Overall the day went well. Here’s hoping for a good weekend.

Arrival on site for cuboree

Today Wilbur and Akela headed to Woodhouse for the Cuboree. It was gone six by the time we left home, after a long day of doing the food shopping.

We arrived at Woodhouse and sorted the food. The cubs weren’t due on sight until Friday evening, but Akela needed to be up there early to help set up the tents, and other bits and pieces.

But it was a good chance to relax before the onslaught of 1,300 Cubs on site.

Shopping for Cuboree

What a day! Akela and I have been all over the place buying food for Cuboree. It is going to be a huge weekend and I am sure that all the Cubs will certainly be well fed. This was a HUGE shopping expedition! I am certainly looking forward to going up to Camp this evening.

Art Gallery Trip with Mawson Lakes Joey Mob

On Sunday 6th November, Akela and I went with the Joeys into Adelaide, so we could do some activities at the Adelaide Art Gallery.

We met at Mawson Lakes Interchange at 10:45am and caught the 11:02 train into town. From there, we headed along North Terrace to the Art Gallery. As we walked along North Terrace, one of the Joeys noticed the white crosses and red poppies in preparation for Remembrance Day on Friday.

We had a few minutes early, but that was a good chance to get ready for the 1st activity.

The first activity we did was the talk of the pictures hanging in the art gallery. It was aimed at the Joey’s age group and the lady was very good and held the children’s attention. While this was happening, we also had another lady come around and provide the Joeys with a chance to take part in a Muppet skit. It was quite good and the Joeys really enjoyed playing with the Muppets.

From there, the Joeys went into the art activity and made wall hangings. Some of them were very well done and the Joeys were very happy to take them home.

From there, the Joeys had lunch and a visit around the Museum next door to the Art Gallery. Once that was done, it was time to head home. The Joeys certainly had a good day, as did the parents. It is certainly something that the Joey Mob will be doing something again.

Carp Removal Competition

Today, some of the Joeys, Cubs and their families (with Akela and I of course!) went and participated in the Carp Removal! – fishing Competition at North Lakes Golf Course in Playford North. It was a good chance for the cubs and joeys to do some fishing and environmental stuff as well.

The event was a joint venture between Playford Council and a fishing club, which surprising was the same one that the leader from St Kilda is with. He was there and quite happy to chat with all.

Water Mellons

This year, Akela has seeds (again) to plant. This time round, they are Watermellons. We're not sure how they are going to go this year. But we are hopeful that we will e able to actually see some furit of our labour.

Anyhow, today Wilbur planted his seeds with Rufus watching over him to make sure they all got done before Rufus heads off on his over seas holiday

Bear Grylls and Market Promotion

This is a clip  Bear Grylls made, promoting Scouting in Australia. Bear Grylls, as everyone knows, is well known for his TV Show. But he also has been a member of Scouting in England and is a very strong supporter of scouting. So, we are pleased to be able to show this clip here.

On another note, Akela and Wilbur are heading to a market to do some promotional stuff for the Scout Group on Saturday, so that should be a enjoyable day. It will be interesting to see if we get any people asking about Scouting and wanting more information (which is obviously the aim of being there!)

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

October Long Weekend - Slowdown Football game

Today, Wilbur went to watch the SA vs Vic Slowdown at Adelaide Oval. The game is a fun game for charity (the Little Heros Foundation) which raises money for sick children at the Women and Childrens Hospital here in Adelaide. The game is generally held on the October  long weekend and charge is $5 per person to get in. The teams are generally the two local AFL teams (Adelaide Crows and Port Power) but on occasions, has been a interstate affair (SA vs Vic) and where previous (retired) AFL players pull on the respective colours and play a game of football.  It always attracts a crowd and the money goes to a good charity. The foundation, Little Heroes Foundation can be found at the following link www.littleheroesfoundation.com.au
This year, with the Victorians on board (the last time was 2004), it was a joint fundraiser between the Little Heroes Foundation (set up by Chris McDermott and Tony McGuiness) and Reach Foundation (a youth charity set up Jim Styles – a former Melbourne player and current president who is battling cancer).
It was a good day, and yes – South Australia won, by a point. Money was raised for a charity and it was just a generally relaxing way to spend a labor day long weekend.

Carisbrooke District Bowling Night

Tonight, i went with Akela to the District Joey Bowling Night. It was heaps of fun and the Joeys certainly had a great time. The trophey was huge! But Mawson Lakes was not the winners. Not that this was the most important part of the evening. the aim of the evening was for the Joeys to have fun, which by the looks of it, they all did.

Royal Adelaide Show

Today, Wilbur went to the Royal Adelaide Show with Akela, who was doing a shift on the Scout Display. It was heaps of fun and there were free activities for the children to do that came into the tent. There was even a basketballer from the Adelaide 36ers. They have a promotional arrangement with each other and it was good to see – especially the Yr 7 class that came through, who all enjoyed the chance to shot baskets with the basketballer.

Cub Hike - Para Wirra Recreational Park

Today, the Cubs went for a hike at Para Wirra Recreational Park. It was a good day to go for a walk and was certainly an enjoyable day for all who attended. Akela even got to take some video footage of two Emus walking up the path towards us. It was pretty awesome!

Palaver - Sunday 28th August 2011

Sunday was another early start, but breakfast was very welcome and certainly much appreciated by everyone. People had been up late talking the night before, with a lot of ideas being exchanged.

There was only one session on Sunday morning, before the regular cub leaders forum taking place. Ideas were put forward and feedback as well on different things.

Lunch was there before we knew it and was certainly very welcome. Certainly needed before the huge clean up that was undertaken – although the area had been kept generally tidied over the weekend.

I am glad Akela took me and that we had a good weekend away.

Palaver - Saturday Night 27th August 2011

Saturday dawned bright and early. The rooms were quite comfortable and both Akela and I were quite warm. Breakfast was plentiful and warming. Akela just had cereal. But I did check out the cooked breakfast enjoyed by those who had it.

Our first session of the day was about Ceremonies. It is very clear that these are an important part of Cubing, allowing the pack to come together and celebrate the achievements of others in the pack and being an important part of the opening and closing of pack meetings. We then headed to Morning tea and our second session, which looked at the differences between Australian and American Scouting, especially Cub Scouting. Our final session before lunch was on Cub Cooking, which occurred right before lunch.

Lunch was very filling and there was no way we were going hungry this weekend! Hamburgers and salad was great and very filling. Certainly much appreciated by Wilbur!

After lunch, the next session was out and about around Woodhouse. This was interesting and allowed us much needed fresh air and exercise. There’s no way anyone on Palaver is underfed! It was quite pleasant at Woodhouse. A little cool, but it wasn’t raining, there was plenty of sunshine, creating a nice day to be outside.

Afternoon tea allowed Akela’s six a chance to practice their segment for after tea entertainment. Thanks to one of their day participants, the group leant a simple folk dance and Akela is now wishing that she had gotten someone to record it as a video on her camera as a record. All the skits were entertaining and the evening was certainly a long night of a lot of laughter and enjoyment by all. It was late before Wilbur made it to bed, but it was certainly a enjoyable night

Friday Night at Palaver 26th August 2011

Today, Akela and Wilbur headed to Woodhouse for the weekend. The reason for the weekend at Woodhouse was that it was Palaver. This is a weekend where Cub Leaders come together, learn new skills, refresh old ones and get a chance to get to know other leaders in a relaxed setting.

Tonight, after registering, we made a box out of greeting cards and enjoyed a really nice supper. It was certainly good to be able to have a warm drink tonight after the drive up to woodhouse! While it wasn’t raining it was certainly cold.

There was much conversation till gone midnight before everyone went to bed. It certainly looks like a full weekend from this program that we were given.
Makins sure we are heading the right way to get to Woodhouse Campsite.

Sturt vs Port, Adelaide Oval - Friday Night Football

This evening, Akela and Wilbur went to Adelaide Oval to watch Sturt play Port in the SANFL. Akela is a Sturt Supporter, and has been since a small child. Her late grandfather was also a Sturt supporter and no doubt where she gets it from (other members of her family follow Glenelg in the SANFL). It was a good evening, even if a little cool. Sturt lost, but a good time was still had by Akela and Wilbur.

Trip into city

Today, Wilbur went into the city with Akela. The purpose was so Akela could donate some blood, a activity that she started doing many years ago, when in Rovers and has kept doing ever since.

While in town, Akela went about some other things she needed to do while there. While on their travels, they came across the following sights, which Wilbur thought he would share with people here.

Monday, August 15, 2011

Adelaide vs Geelong at AAMI Stadium

Well, Wilbur was out and about again. Today he headed out with Akela to watch the Crows play Geelong at AAMI Stadium. It was a very close game and certainly a good one. The Adelaide Football team lost – but by a respectable 11 points (compared to 165 point loss by Port to Hawthorn)

Tomorrow, Wilbur will be heading into town with Akela, while she goes to donate blood and do some other stuff. Wilbur is certainly getting out and about at the moment.

Carisbrooke Dlistrict Cub Leadership Course

Today, Wilbur went with Akela to the Carisbrooke District Cub Leadership Course today. There were 25 Cubs in attendance and they learnt heaps, as well as earning their leadership badges. Many were quite interested in learning the ins and outs, but also had a lot of energy to burn as well!

Overall it was a enjoyable day, and I am sure all the Cubs went away with a lot of new ideas on how to improve things.

Wilbur at Sturt vs Central District Football Game

What a day Wilbur has had. Akela secured an invitation to have lunch with the Central Districts Football Club President today, via one of the elected members on Council. Centrals were playing Sturt Football Club (who Akela has followed since she was a small child).

Lunch was very nice, and certainly very filling – actually much better than the last one that Akela had there.

The game was good, and we were lucky it didn’t rain. Not that it would have really made much difference if it had, as Akela and Wilbur were sitting in the stands with the Mayor and a number of other elected members from Playford Council.

Overall, it was an enjoyable day out, even if Sturt didn’t win the game (but they did put up a good effort and were in the lead at one point as well)

Term 3 has started

Well, we certainly have hit the ground running for scouting this term. But in reality, Akela really hasnt had a break from scouting during the holidays! She had three meetings while the Cubs were enjoying the holiday break and will also be looking after the Joey Mob until they find a replacement leader.

the Cubs are running a sleep Over to raise awareness of homeless issues and getting some badgework done at the same time (http://www.everydayhero.com.au/mawson_lakes_cub_pack is the link to the page for donations) and also have a District Cub Leadership Course coming up as well and a variety of other activities.

Hope everyone comes back and checks what else we are doing again soon

Planting and football

We have Rufus the Joey Bear, staying with us. So, Wilbur decided that today was a good day to do some stuff around the house with him. First, they made sure the birds had some bird seed to feed upon. Next, it was time to do some gardening and making sure the Basil was in a bigger pot so that it can grow. It is a very good herb to have in soups so Akela’s husband says! After an afternoon nap, it was time to head out to AMMI Stadium to watch the Crows vs. Sydney Swans game this evening. It was certainly a wet evening and a very close game as well. Rufus and Wilbur hang out in Akela’s bag as that was the driest place to be. It certainly was an interesting day and both Wilbur and Rufus are glad to be home, where it is dry and warm to sleep.
